Dubai Converts Palm Waste Into Biomass Pellet Fuel

Over the last decades, the palm oil industry has been growing rapidly due to increasing demands for food, cosmetic and hygienic products. Tapping into such opportunities, the UAE has been leveraging its abundant renewable resources and partnering with global companies to reduce its carbon footprint. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Dubai is collaborating with a Saudi-based engineering group, Jubail Pearl, to produce and commercialise biofuel production from oil-palm and palm-oil wastes.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr Yousef Al Assaf said: “Sustainability is a major pillar of our strategy at RIT, both in Dubai and New York, and it is one of four fundamental themes that define our new campus development. Senior and graduate level engineering students will have the opportunity to take part in the experiments. We need to prepare ourselves for the post-oil economy and this initiative is the first step in our long-term commitment to developing a new energy portfolio for the future of society.”
An ancient natural resource that was once used for fuel to heat homes and bake bread, the palm tree has now found a future as a renewable source of energy, thanks to modern science. Under the initiative, fallen leaves of trees are gathered and raw materials are shredded to produce biomass pellets that are both energy-efficient and carbon neutral. This method called pelletisation is far less expensive as compared to traditional fossil fuels, in terms of extraction, logistics and processing. The waste is collected from trees that have shed or fallen naturally, saving the cost of transporting and processing palm waste through landfill.
How to Convert Palm Waste Into Biomass Pellet Fuel

Step 1 – palm waste Chipper: palm waste chipper is the equipment to process palm fruit bunch into palm fiber, which is easier to be dried and finely crushed in the following processes. Thus the final palm waste pellets quality can be guaranteed.
Step 2 – Rotary Drum Dryer: The proper moisture content for pelletizing is 12-15%, while the moisture content in palm waste is about 67%. Therefore, drying process is necessary for palm waste pellets production. Special designed for drying the palm waste, our rotary drum dryer is high in efficiency but low in energy consumption.
Step 3 – palm waste Crushing Machine: palm waste crushing machine is designed for crushing the palm waste into small pieces, and the machine is the necessary equipment for palm waste pelletizing. Usually the machine can be combined with the palm waste shredder machine.
Step 4 – palm waste palm fiber pellet Machine: Generally, the palm waste pellets production is in large scale. Adopt high-precision gear driving, the output is improved by about 20% compared with the belt drive one. Step 5 – palm waste Pellet Cooler: palm waste pellets discharged from pellet mill are of high temperature about 65℃-90℃ as well as high moisture content of 17%-18%. Pellets will shock if the temperature or humidity is too high. Our counter current pellet cooler is used to remove pellet heat as well as the moisture content to ensure pellets quality and shelf-life.
Step 6 – palm waste Pellet Packaging Machine: After cooling, the packing process is necessary to protect the palm waste pellet from damp and dust. Automatic palm waste pellet packing machine is advanced designed and manufactured with PLC controlling technology. Equip with accurate measure instrument, it has high weighing precision, bagging speed and stable performance.
Notes: Raw materials should be sufficient to ensure the continuity of pellet production. So the location of the palm waste pellet plant should be convenient for the raw materials transportation.
Advantages of Palm Waste Pellets
- Wide application: palm waste pellets can be applied both in home and factory. You can use them in heating stove, cooking range and BBQ, or industrial boiler and power plant to take the place of coal.
- Environmental friendly: palm waste pellets emit little smoke, noxious or particles gas in burning.
- Low moisture content: palm waste pellets contains 8-12% or less moisture, much less than palm waste fibers (50-60%). Low moisture content can improve the combustion ratio and reduce the transportation cost.
- No need for binders: palm waste contains about 13-25% of lignin and 43-65% of cellulose. The lignin can play the role of binder in pelletizing.
Palm Waste Pellets
- Convenient to use: As palm waste pellets are much more compact and denser than palm waste fibers, they need smaller space and loading capacity, therefore less transportation cost.
- High heating efficiency: the palm waste pellets can burn sufficiently in the boiler with only 5% ash residues. The calorific value is 4,200 – 4,900 kcal/kg, equivalent to sub-bituminous coal.
